How to split mess bills fairly (meals, bazar & shared bills)
Mess money is really two different bills wearing one coat: the cost of meals, and the shared bills like rent and electricity. Splitting them fairly is simpler than it looks.
The two kinds of mess cost
First, meal cost — what you owe for the food you ate, worked out from the bazar spend. Second, shared bills — rent, electricity, water, wifi — that everyone splits regardless of meals.
Keeping these separate is the key to a split that feels fair to everyone.
Splitting the meal cost
Meal cost is your meal rate multiplied by the meals you actually ate. Because counts are logged before each cutoff, nobody pays for meals they skipped.
See the dedicated guide on how the meal rate is calculated for the three methods you can choose from.
Splitting shared bills
Shared bills are split equally by default, or with custom amounts if you need to. Each member approves their share, then pays by the method your mess uses.
One ledger, running balances
Every meal, receipt and bill posts to a single ledger, and each member’s balance updates the moment money moves. There is one source of truth instead of a notebook and three memories.
Settling at month-end
At month-end the ledger shows exactly who owes what. Pay by bKash or cash, mark it paid, and the admin approves — the running balance clears. Premium messes can export a clean monthly PDF of the whole thing.
